Each year, hundreds of gold medal winning products from around the country enter the Australian Grand Dairy Awards with high hopes that they might be judged Champion in the grand final of dairy awards. Our panel of esteemed cheese and dairy judges have spooned, sipped and nibbled their way through over 400 products to crown the 54 finalists, 18 Champions and 2 Grand Champions in this year's Australian Grand Dairy Awards.

Champion - Roaring Forties Blue | King Island Dairy
King Island Dairy's Roaring Forties has a beautiful network of blue, grey mould veins beneath its blue waxed exterior. The waxing of the cheese during maturation results in very sweet, fruity flavours and a rich mouthfeel that the judges loved… so much so, they awarded it Grand Champion Cheese for 2019, making it the very best cheese in the country.
About King Island Dairy
According to King Island Dairy’s Head Cheesemaker, Ueli Berger, King Island is one of the best environments in the world to make cheese. The rugged island with just 1200 inhabitants, has one of the cleanest natural environments in the world. With mineral rich soil, cool temperatures and abundant rainfall, local cows from eight select farms graze on paddocks that receive ocean sea salt spray to produce a unique rich, sweet milk. This milk, coupled with the expertise of their cheesemakers is what makes King Island Dairy cheese so special.
Finalist - Oak Blue | Berrys Creek Gourmet Cheese
The substantial Oak Blue has a real presence as do the majestic oak trees of the local Mossvale Park. A recipe inspired by the gorgonzola style, this cheese has a lingering, full mouth assault on the senses. Heavily veined and aged for 3-months.

Finalist - Mossvale Blue | Berrys Creek Gourmet Cheese
Berrys Creek’s Mossvale Blue is hand-made by cheesemaker Barry Charlton, Cheryl and the team using a combination of Jersey, Ayshire, Holstein and Aussie Red Guernsey cows’ milk. Over two months, the cheese is left to ripen and develop light green-blue veins, remaining mild, sweet and creamy in flavour. It’s difficult to stop at just one mouthful!

Champion - Heritage Reserve Vintage Cheddar | Bega Cheese
Bega Heritage Reserve Vintage Cheddar is matured for between 18-months and two years to achieve bold, sharp, fruity flavours and a deliciously crumbly texture. Given the maturity of the cheese, expect a crunch from tiny white calcium lactate crystals. One thing that makes this cheese so special is that it’s so rare, and only available from the Bega Heritage Centre in Bega NSW! If you can get your hands on some, it’s best at room temperature, generously served on crackers with fresh fruits or fruit paste to complement its natural flavours.

Raised on a dairy farm in the Great Southern region, Dellendale Creamery’s cheesemaker Chris Vogel spent 10 years perfecting his technique in Switzerland before settling in Denmark, Western Australia. Back on Australian shores Chris established his own boutique Dellendale brand and continues to adapt his Alpine and raw milk style specialty, adding some local flavour with Australian milk and native herbs.

Champion - Trecce | Montefiore Cheese
Montefiore’s consistent quality and attention to detail has earnt this Trecce cheese its place as a finalist in the 2019 awards. Trecce, meaning ‘braid’ in Italian, is a hand-stretched plaited cheese, with a milky, mild flavour and a firm, fibrous texture, like mozzarella. You can slice or tear it and drape over salads, or melt onto pizza straight from the oven.

That's Amore Buffalo Ricotta is a farm style ricotta made with fresh and locally sourced Buffalo’s milk. Buffalo ricotta is a fresh cheese produced from whey left over from the production of buffalo’s milk cheese. It is creamier and smoother than cow’s milk ricotta, with a white colour and a unique delicate sweet citrusy flavour.

That’s Amore Cheese cheesemaker Giorgio Linguanti migrated to Australia from Italy in 2004 going from not speaking a word of English, to opening his own Cheese company in 2008 and winning some of Australia’s most prestigious awards. Giorgio prides himself on his artisan skills and has worked hard to build a cheese laboratory in Thomastown that allows him to experiment with new products so there is always something new to offer.

Champion - Pecorino Pepato | Floridia Cheese
Floridia Pecorino Pepato is a natural cheese manufactured from fresh pasteurized cow’s milk. This cheese is a drum-shaped wheel and distributed throughout are whole black peppercorns, firm in texture with a hard body. Pepato is matured for a minimum of 4 months, where it develops its characteristic spicy taste. It is an exciting alternative to the more common Pecorino. The salty, tangy citrusy flavours complemented by the spiciness of the peppercorns make this cheese a great table cheese.

Champion - Torndirrup Appenzelle | Dellendale Creamery
Thanks to cheesemaker Chris Vogel’s 10 years in Switzerland, he has perfected the centuries-old Swiss brines which are patiently brushed into this golden washed-rind cheese for 5-9 months. The process results in rich, barnyard aromas and a dense, smooth and supple texture. Chris believes his Torndirrup Appenzelle is unique due to the environment the cows live in and the grasses they eat, here in Australia. Leisurely tasting, this cheese releases complex nut, butterscotch and sweet pineapple notes on the palate.
