Although butter, cream and ice cream are made from milk, the Australian Dietary Guidelines classify them as discretionary or ‘junk’ foods, and should only be included in the diet now and then.
The Australian Dietary Guidelines classify all types of milk, cheese and yoghurt as healthy, ‘core’ foods, since they are rich in nutrients and are associated with positive health benefits such as reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. The recommendation for daily milk, cheese and yoghurt includes regular fat and flavoured varieties. Milk, cheese and yoghurt make up the dairy food group and can be included in the diet every day for good health.
