What is the difference between different milk brands?

There are many different milk brands available at the supermarket. However, all brands must follow the guidelines set out in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The Code defines milk and dictates the minimum milkfat and protein content that is required for a product to meet that definition.

Milk can be described as ‘homogenised’ or ‘unhomogenised’. Homogenisation involves putting the milk under pressure through fine nozzles, which evenly disperses fat globules. This prevents cream from separating and rising to the top, allowing a more consistent texture and taste. You can purchase homogenised and unhomogenised milk from the supermarket; this information will be listed on the product label.

Some brands may choose to add ingredients to enhance flavour and nutritional value, if they are producing a flavoured milk, fortified milk, or lactose-free milk product. Any additional ingredients will need to be listed on the nutrition information panel, ensuring you can make informed dietary decisions.

People often wonder which milk brands they should purchase to support Australian farmers. Milk labels will also indicate whether the product you are purchasing is sourced from Australian milk through the presence of an Australian grown logo.
