Is it better to buy branded or non-branded dairy products to support Aussie farmers?

Branded dairy products generally return more margin to farmers, so choosing Australian-branded products is a great way to support farming families and communities.

By choosing Australian dairy products, especially branded ones, you’re not only supporting farming families but entire dairy communities.

With so many milk and dairy options available, it’s no wonder people are confused about which products best support Australian farmers. The price farmers receive for their milk is based on its fat and protein content—called 'milk solids'—and the price set by the milk processor.

It’s widely recognised that processors earn better margins on branded products compared to private labels. This, in turn, impacts how much money flows back into the supply chain and ultimately to the farmers.

Private label is the exclusive product made by and sold for that particular retail outlet or supermarket. Branded products are manufactured and then distributed to be sold at separate retailers.

When choosing dairy foods, keep in mind the varieties best suited to your nutritional needs, and look for the Australian Grown logo (see example below) on the back of the package to be sure the product is made from Australian milk. While branded milk returns a better margin to farmers, the best way to support them is simple—buy Australian milk and buy lots of it!
