Milk, cheese and yoghurt contain a package of essential nutrients for good health including high quality protein for healthy bones and muscles.
Protein is naturally found in a variety of foods from both plant and animal sources. Not all proteins are created equal and foods from various sources differ in the amount and type of protein they contain.
Animal protein sources like meat, eggs and dairy foods are examples of high quality protein. High quality proteins are those that provide all the essential amino acids your body can't make on its own. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and help build, repair and maintain body tissues.
Milk proteins, such as whey and casein are considered high quality proteins and help provide a convenient source of protein. Studies using dairy protein supplements have shown greater increases in strength and lean body mass compared to all other protein sources.
Plant protein sources such as beans, nuts, vegetables and grains can also help meet nutritional needs. However, these often do not provide the amounts of essential amino acids the body needs.
Most Australians meet their protein needs but incorporating more high-quality protein foods, such as milk, cheese and yoghurt has added benefits including helping to support weight management, active lifestyles and healthy ageing.
