Does eating dairy products cause inflammation in joints?

There are many popular diets around that promote anti-inflammatory eating for arthritis or joint problems, however there is no evidence that you need to avoid eating dairy foods, especially as they offer many health benefits.

Inflammation, stiffness, soreness and weakness in the joints is commonly referred to as “arthritis”. According to Arthritis Australia, it is a common name for a range of over 100 different medical conditions that either damage or aggravate the joints. By 2030, it is projected there will be 5.4 million Australians with arthritis. Although more common as you age, even young children can get some types of arthritis.1

There are countless fad diets, food myths and old wives’ tales when it comes to advice on eating for joint inflammation or arthritis.

General dietary advice for many types of arthritis involves healthy eating guidelines and weight management, which can assist in taking the pressure off ankles and knees. Gout is a form of arthritis that may involve specific eating guidelines to reduce alcohol and certain purine rich foods. Dairy foods are encouraged by Arthritis Australia, as even though they contain purines, evidence shows they appear to lower the risk of gout.2,3
